Before we start service we, as a group of 47 volunteers, go through eleven weeks of training. We have technical training, Spanish and cultural training. We have class Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. We usually have Spanish class for four hours three to four times a week. We are in groups of about four to five people for language training. Our language facilitators are outstanding. They really know how to teach and make learning fun at the same time.
All the information that is presented in class and training is very useful. However, the days can be pretty exhausting, especially Spanish class. Speaking Spanish nearly all day really takes a lot of focus. Let's just say I have no trouble falling asleep at night.
Everyone that facilitates and leads training is outstanding. All the leaders do their best to make sure we have the information we will need over the next two years and seem to sincerely care about our well-being.
Some of us have started running together after training ends most days. That is such a great way to end each day of training. However, I am sure we look a little ridiculous—a gaggle of 8-10 gringos going running. We have fun though!
There is also a Peace Corps soccer team that has entered into a local tournament. I cheer for the team. But the team has gone down in Peru Peace Corps history—they have had 3 non-losses. It's a lot of fun to watch the games. They move quickly!
